The Kate is great because of the Kate Volunteer Guild which provides volunteer hours to several aspects of the theater. Volunteer Guild Members are also ambassadors for the Center and its programming throughout the community and the region. On average, volunteers donate over 10,000 hours to the Center each year in a variety of different areas. Being a volunteer at the Kate puts you in the center of the action, allows you to attend shows, but more importantly allows you to give back to the community through an organization that brings joy, respect, and prestige to Old Saybrook and the surrounding area.
Volunteer positions are available in the following areas:
Box Office Assistant
Work with the Box Office Manager during Box Office hours to assist patrons at the Box Office window and on the phone.
House Manager
Oversee a complete show with complement of ushers from before the doors open until the last patron has left the building. House managers ensure every guest has a first-class Kate experience.
Usher
Support the house manager and ensure each guest has a first-class experience while seating them, at intermission, and as they exit the theater.
Poster/Brochure Distribution
Assist in the distribution of quarterly brochures and monthly posters to area business.
Receptionist/Gift Shop Representative
Situated at the front doors, greet guests as they arrive at the Kate, direct them toward the museum or box office, sell items at the Kate’s Boutique, and answer the main phone line during business hours.
Office Assistant
Assist the management team with mailings and other general office tasks.
Museum Docent
Train to conduct guided tours of the beautiful, new Katharine Hepburn Museum, featuring personal letters, home movies, wardrobe items and other memorabilia. Provide information to those choosing a self-guided tour during regular Museum hours, which are currently Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. Docents may be scheduled for special group tours at other times. Assisting in the Gift Shop may also occur during a docent shift.
Hospitality
Be in the middle of the action backstage as you ensure artists’ hospitality riders are met and they are comfortable while they are our guest at the Kate.
