This hilarious comedy centers around three couples with the men all working for the same firm - from the boss to the young man just joining the department. The playwright, Alan Ayckbourn has written and produced over seventy full-length plays over the past fifty years and has won numerous awards including the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010.
The story unfolds as one of the men is having an affair with the wife of the boss, and when each returns home suspiciously late one evening they invent a story about having to spend some time smoothing domestic matters in the home of the third younger couple. The antics really heat up as the third couple are introduced to each of the other two couples.
The play is set in early 1970’s which allows for plenty of comic routines around landline telephones, distinct class structures and changing sexual mores. The action takes place in the living rooms of the two older couples and in many scenes the audience is watching both scenes play act simultaneously – it is especially clever and funny watching the younger couple attend two consecutive dinner-parties on two different nights – acted out in the same scene. The fast pace and physical humor makes this one of Ayckbourn’s funniest and most exciting plays to experience.
Saybrook Stage Company is very pleased to be returning to The Kate for their 15th production. The most recent plays are Barefoot In The Park this past July as well as The Farnsworth Invention, Noises Off, Deathtrap and The Wayside Motor Inn.
