Marion Hepburn Grant, A Biography

Katharine and Marion Hepburn

Marion and Margaret Hepburn

This biography on Marion Hepburn Grant, sister of Katharine Hepburn, is fabulous. It was written by Grant’s daughter, actress Katharine Houghton Grant (“Guess who’s Coming to Dinner?”) and published in 1989, three years after the death of Marion.

The book is out of print, but I found a copy on ebay. You will be able to find this book in some Connecticut libraries in Old Saybrook and perhaps at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford. It is a sweet tale about the sister of Katharine Hepburn as told by Hepburn’s niece, Katharine.

Among the pictures included, is one of big sister Katharine with Marion, and another of Marion and sister, Margaret (Peg). Peg was often mistaken for Katharine, you can see why.

The book entails what it was like growing up in the Hepburn household and the causes for which they all stood.

It is truly an enjoyable read, it will give you an in depth look at the real lives of the Hepburns.

Are these the most precious photos ever? It’s baby Marion Hepburn and her big sister Katharine spending some time together with their goldfish.

Katharine Hepburn was born in 1907, perhaps these pictures were taken 8 to 10 years later? Little did Katharine know then that she would be come one of the biggest movie stars of all time.

We are so excited to get the doors of Hepburn’s theatre open so others can follow in her footsteps especially thru our summer drama camps. Who knows what kind of stars may get their start in the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center.

Katharine Hepburn had two sisters one was Marion (in the upper right hand corner of the photo) which you can read about a bit more about in “Conversations with Ellsworth Grant.” Ellsworth was Marion’s husband.

The other sister was Margaret (upper left hand corner of the photo) who lived up on a farm in Canton and who was a librarian for a part of her life.

The current head of the Oliver Wolcott Library in Litchfield wrote a darling article on the library’s blog about what she learned from Margaret Hepburn.

Margaret Hepburn loved books and she passed that on to others who had a love for the written word. The article is entitled “The Hippest Shusher.” Enioy!
