Katharine Hepburn’s Dear Friend, Lauren Bacall
Posted by Ann in Katharine Hepburn, tags: ', Golden Age of Hollywood, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, Spencer Tracy“By Myself and Then Some” is a book by long time Katharine Hepburn friend, actress, Lauren Bacall. This book released in 2005 is an expanded and updated version of Bacall’s book entitled, “By Myself.”
In this latest version, Bacall speaks of Hepburn like this:
“She was Miss Hepburn, Aunt Kat, Katie, Kate, Kathy (to Spencer Tracy). She was all of those depending upon your relationship and she was also Katharine with an “A.”
Bacall reminisces about so many moments with Hepburn in this book, it’s a fun read about times gone by and that Golden Age of Hollywood. Bacall discusses moments with Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and her husband, Humphrey Bogart. Remember it was this grouping that started the very first “Rat Pack.” See the earlier post on the blog.
This might be a fun read for the new year, 2009, the year the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Theater opens.
See you at “The Kate!”

ohh….LOVE this book.
The original version is better though. The first 330 pages of “By Myself and then some” are just a reprint word for word of “By Myself”. Last last like 75 pages are great though.
The way she speaks about Bogart’s death though, tears me up-everytime without fail.
I am headed to the bookstore to buy this one TODAY. If they don’t have it, I know Amazon will.
That bottom pic of Lauren is one of my favorite celebrity pictures ever. It’s breathtaking and I can never look away. She, Katharine wiht an A (love that!), Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Rita Hayworth – they all had so much character and fire in addition to their beauty. With a few exceptions, Hollywood’s missing that today.
Thanks for the book recommendation. One of my resolutions is to read more, now I have someplace to start!
I’m going to add a post to my blog about the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Theater (exciting!) and I’m going to add your blog to my blogroll. I would LOVE it if you’d add my blog to yours when you get a chance. Thanks!
Audrey is a very jovial person, it shows in the quote that she left us with “I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person. ” -Hannah Lee
