That’s you!

Never to be left in the wake, the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Theater is and has been for some time on Facebook, and now we’re on Twitter. We laugh at the latest technology and then get on board. Find us at @Cometothekate.

Now if you’re whiling away the time, you will never missing anything going on at The Kate, ever and that is our intention.

The Kate is such a vibrant center in Hepburn’s beloved Old Saybrook, Connecticut, that the world needs to know about it to keep us front and center always.

The avatar of Hepburn on the Twitter page is from a huge gathering of stars back in the day at MGM Grand.

So welcome The Kate to Twitter and when you see this, retweet for us if you please. You’ll be helping the arts and this non-profit “gem of a place with a movie star name” thrive. Thank you kindly.

See you at The Kate

Mark your calendars for July 17th , 2010. This year’s gala for the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Art Center is going to be out of this world.

I sat with the gala chair last week and my jaw was dropping open at not only the theme which is “Midsummer Magic,” but the folks who have gotten involved to make it an event that will be “over the moon.”

As in our very first gala which was in October of 2009 (yes, we changed it to summer), there will be 400 seats available and because of the large number of guests there will be two shows. Last year we featured Connecticut’s Moses Pendleton’s Momix and it was a sensation. This year, yes, you guessed it, can’t tell you yet.

There will be cocktails with a silent auction, dinner and this year there will be dancing under the tent.

I have been told a little about this tent, and well, you’re just going to have to wait. Suffice it to say it will be something the likes of which Old Saybrook, Connecticut has never seen. How’s that for a tease?

Black tie will not be required…so put on the cocktail dress and come out.

Where can you find out more?

Go to the The Kate website of course and call the theater.

See you at The Kate!

Mark your calendars for April 14th (Wednesday) and get tickets for this one man show starring actor, Ed Asner.

The Emmy-Award- winning Asner will be taking the stage at The Kate as FDR in a one man show.

‘FDR” is taken from Dore Schary’s “Sunrise at Campobello” which played on Broadway in the 1950’s.

Asner is a seven-time Emmy Award winner for his portrayal of “Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

Asner as FDR follows the life of the iconic president as he reflects on his years in office, from inauguration to the trials of World War II.

Jonathan-Edwards-at-The-KateThis was just a toe-tappin good time. Jonathan Edwards, in his signature style, came out bare-foot on stage and played with three other amazing musicians.

The sold-old crowd was rockin and I mean “rockin” to everything Edwards sang, talk about a following. His voice has lost nothing over the years nor has his guitar or harmonica playing. He’s still cranking out the new songs too. The  a capella numbers by Edwards and the others were marvelous.

After so many years Edwards has his stage banter down pat, he knows his audience and they know him. Edwards told the crowd he was so impressed with the acoustics at The Kate that he would be coming back. That’s a really great compliment from a guy who has been on stages around the world for more than 40 years.

On the road with Edwards these days is his long time friend and accompanist whom he met in 1969, Stuart Schulman. Schulman plays the bass, piano, fiddle as well as vocals. Also Taylor Armerding, formerly of Northern Lights is an amazing mandolin player.

The “young-in” in the group is banjo player, double bass, guitar, pedal steel and cello player, Charlie Rose.

There were a lot of hands that went up before the start of the concert when Executive Director, Chuck Still asked “how many of you are here for the first time?” We think that’s great that so many are discovering The Kate.
